Celebrating Award volunteers: Esther Mureke-Kuria
To mark International Youth Day, 100 Award volunteers from around the world are being recognised for their outstanding support to young people through The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award.
In recognition of the exceptional work, they will each receive a letter of commendation from HRH Prince Edward, Chairman of the International Award Foundation – and a special commemorative coin marking the life and legacy of our Founder, HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, produced by the Royal Mint in the UK.
Esther is just one of those inspirational volunteers being recognised.
Esther Mureke-Kuria is a volunteer with the President’s Award – Kenya (PA-K), as the Award is known there.
She has pioneered the Award’s work in Kenyan prisons and become a positive female role model to the boys who take part. And now her inspiring volunteer work is receiving royal recognition.
I have always believed that the young people I teach need a holistic education to thrive and make an impact in their community and this recognition has added a spring to my step. It is also for the management at Nyeri High School, my colleagues and, of course, my Award participants who have broken gender stereotypes to trust me as a woman.
