The Award in Benin started in 1990. The Programme in Benin focuses on young people in rural communities and has approximately 13,000 participants.

In 1988, Cameroon embraced the Award programme. Since this time and after multiple difficulties and transformation, the Award, in 2018, which is 30 years on, is even more relevant and equipped to respond to the broad exigencies of empowering, educating, transforming and challenging young people through its non-formal model, to become committed citizens at the service of their communities and country.

The Award in Cote d’Ivoire was started in 1989.

The Award in Ghana started in 1967. However, the name was changed to the Head of State Award Scheme in 1974 by General Ignatius Acheampong who was the Head of State at the time. The Right Honorable Lord Paul Boateng and Otunfuo Osei Tutu II are the Life Patrons of the Award.

The Award in Guinea was started in 1990 in Conakry during The National Conference of Youth and Sport. It is known locally as Le Merite International de la Jeunesse. It started in Guinea during the National Conference for Youth and Sports in 1990 in Conakry.

The Award in Kenya started in 1966 by the first President of the Republic of Kenya, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta. It was enacted by an Act of Parliament, The President’s Award Act, No. 30 of 2017. The Act became operational on 16 August, 2017.

The Award in Lesotho was adopted from the United Kingdom on 1974 by Fr. Tobia Seeiso Mariti, who was the King’s Scout. In the same year, it was proposed that the Award would be called the Prince Mohato Scheme. Permission was granted by His Majesty King Moshoeshoe II for this to happen and the Award was officially launched in 1976 by Her Majesty Queen Mamohato Bereng Seeiso. Prince Mohato Bereng Seeiso became the Award in Lesothos Patron.

Madagascar began operating the Award in the mid 1990s. There are currently around 6,000 participants.

The Award in Mauritius started in 1966 by two volunteers from England, Mary Gold Humpries and Trevor Smith. In 1978, a Gold Award Holders’ Association was founded and Regional Award Committees were set up to extend the programmes’s reach in all districts including the Rodrigues. The Award is known locally as The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award – Mauritius.

The Award started in The Federal Republic of Nigeria in the 1970s but was not launched officially until 1986 as the Nigerian National Youth Award (NNYA). The International Award for Young People Nigeria is now the locally known name for The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award in Nigeria.

The Award in the Seychelles started in 1993.

The Award in South Africa was introduced in 1983 under the banner of the Gold Shield Award with Dr. Ian Player as it’s first Chairman . In 1994 it was re-launched as The President’s Award for Youth Empowerment, with Mr Nelson Mandela as the Founding Patron-in-Chief. The President’s Award for Youth Empowerment is an exciting national youth development programme that is affiliated to The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award.  The Award programme operates on a national basis and is served by 4 regional offices situated in the Eastern Cape (Grahamstown); Western Cape (Somerset West), KZN (Hilton) and Gauteng (Johannesburg).There are 15,000 active participants nationally and is available to young people between the ages of 14 and 24 from schools, community youth groups, residential youth facilities and correctional centres.The Award Programme encourages active and accountable citizenship over a three to five year period. It is a tried and tested framework where young people are encouraged to develop themselves and those around them through 4 focus areas: community service, skill development, physical recreation and an adventurous journey.

St. Helena is a small island in the South Atlantic Ocean. We have a population of about 4500 people with an amount of roughly 366 young people between the age of 14 and 24. Our committee consists of a very small group of people who are committed to and passionate about the well being and positivity of the young people of our island.

The Award in Uganda was started in 1995 by the then National Director, the late Jane Rose Acheng.

The Award in Zambia begain as an IAC and later recieved their provisional membership at the 4th International Forum, held in 1991 in Hong Kong. The Award in Zambia then went on to recieve a conditional license in 2013 and a full license two years later in 2015.

The Award was introduced to Antigua and Barbuda in the 1970s, but became dormant during the late 80s. In the 1990s it was resurrected by the Defence Force. The re-established National Award Authority became a member of the Association in 2000.

The Award in Barbados started in 1963 and is privileged to receive the Patronage of The Governor General. On transitioning to a Republic, the President will continue the Patronage of the Award in Barbados.

The Award started in Canada in 1963 and currently over 50,000 young Canadians are actively enrolled. The Award operates in all 10 Provinces and 3 Territories and strives to provide a programme that any young Canadian can do, regardless of socio, economic or physical circumstance. Since its inception in Canada, over 500,000 Canadians have been motivated to participate in the Award.

The Award Programme in Grenada is small, but well-established, having been in existence for nearly 50 years. It launched in 1959, only three years after the Award in the UK.

The Award was stablish in 1999, and became member of the association in 2003 during the Forum hosted by Barbados. The Patron is the President of the country.

The Award in Jamaica started in 1970’s and became member of the Association in the year 2000. The Award is privileged to receive the Patronage of The Governor General.

The Award Programme was started in 1968 by the Principal of the St Mary’s College, Brother Marcus O’ Donovan, who was the first Chairman. The Award currently operates in 15 Award unit groups.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, St. Vincent and the Grenadines is an NGO. The Award Programme in St Vincent and the Grenadines started in 1972. The National Award Authority (SVG) is responsible for the programme in SVG which can be delivered through schools, uniformed and non-uniformed organisations, employers, social clubs, prisons, religious organisations, sports club and other organisations. Presently most of our participants are through Cadets, Girl Guides, Scouts and a small group of independents.

SVG hosted the first ever CASC Adventurous Journey in the Caribbean in 1980 since then hosted the following CASC and IGAT as follows; 1981, 1983, 1986, 1987 (IGAT), 1993, 2003, 2014

Since its thousands of young people have completed their award and many leaders have been involved in the programme. We are on a drive to expand the programme to young people in schools and non uniformed organisations and reach many at risk youths.

The Award in Trinidad and Tobago started in 1964 and has the Patronage of whichever leader is the current President of the two islands.

The Award in Australia was started in 1959 by Sir Adrian Curlewis and has historically recieved the Patrongage of the Governor General of Australia.

The Award in Bangladesh started in 2008 as an initiavite by six national and multinational organaisations to bring the Award to the young people of Bangladesh.

The Award in mainland China has been operating since 1985, initially with the support from the All China Youth Federation. Since then, the Award has grown steadily delivered to more and more young people in China. To meet the growing demand of Chinese speaking young people wanting to undertake the Award, a National Award Operator (NAO), The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award – China (officially registered as Beijing Intaward International Culture Development Company Limited), was established in 2019, operating as a Wholly Foreign Owned Enterprise (WFOE).

In 2020, China will be hosting a series of high-profile events to celebrate the launch of the new entity and the success of the Award and the achievements of young people in China.

Currently in China, there are over 2,200 young people participating in the Award supported by over 70 licenced Award Centres and is working hard to see the Award become available for all young people in China.
