Matthew Syvenky
Award Level:
Gold
Favourite memory of the Award:
My favourite memory of my Award was my Adventurous Journey, where I went on a 14-day sea kayaking journey off the coast of Vancouver Island. This was my first long outdoor journey and changed my perspective on the outdoors, the ocean, and my self-reliance and teamwork skills. Those were the best 14 days of my life!
Age:
20
Biggest challenge from doing the Award:
Organizing a large-scale restoration project with multiple stake-holders and volunteers. I ended up making great relationships with many local organizations and governments, however, it was a very long and difficult process to get there!
Country:
Canada
Have you continued any of your Award activities? If so, what:
Yes! Ecosystems never stop growing and changing. My team and me are continuing to monitor the restoration site to make sure the invasive species don't grow back too strong and the native species are thriving!
Tell us the story behind your photo:
This photo of me was taken by one of my volunteers on the last day of our restoration project. In this picture, I am hugging a snowberry bush that we planted in the restoration site! This was the moment I could finally relax and take in the beauty and volume of the accomplishment my team and I made over the months that this project took.
