Award Level:
Gold
Favourite memory of the Award:
The nights of the adventurous journeys were my favourite memories, sitting around the campfire playing games such as mafia. We would all work together to get as much firewood as we could carry, and enjoy the evening.
Age:
17
Biggest challenge from doing the Award:
Starting the adventurous journey. It would always seem daunting to prepare for the long hikes, however, I would enjoy the journey once it started.
Country:
Australia
Have you continued any of your Award activities? If so, what:
I still continue gymnastics and have been training since the age of 4. I compete in state and national competitions. I have also continued my skill, playing the flute, and will be completing my certificate of performance early next year. In the future I will also continue hiking with friends and family.
Tell us the story behind your photo:
Part of our route took us along the Colo River, yet we had to cross to the other side at some point. Our camp leader advised us that the only way to cross would be to take off shoes and socks, and role up our pants to wade across. However, since our journey was during winter, the water was extremely cold, and none of us wanted to get our feet wet. We kept walking up and down the bank for an addition hour to find a branch that was sturdy enough for us to walk across. We then all found branches that would support our weight, something that also took a long time, and made our way across the log. It was very slippery, so we had to help each other cross, but in the end we made it without anyone getting wet.
