At the International Award Foundation, our global ambition to provide access to the Award for all young people is supported by the work of our International Special Projects grant-giving programme.
And this year, we celebrate its 25th anniversary.
Started in 1999 by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh KG KT GCVO, the programme grants funding to Award Operators for projects that primarily aim to improve access to the Award, extend reach, and sustainably grow the number and diversity of participants, which in turn enables more young people to take part in and achieve their Award.
Our Special Projects grants have accelerated the growth and development of the Award internationally, reaching some of the most at-risk and marginalised communities.
25 years
Over 60 countries
Over 260 projects
Over £5.3m distributed in grants
For some of our Operators, Special Projects funding has allowed them to introduce the Award into schools for young people with additional learning needs, or into children’s homes and custodial institutions. For others, it has allowed them to expand into rural areas, increase digital infrastructure or hire full-time members of staff. But crucially for some, Special Projects funding has been a lifeline; helping them to rebuild the Award in their country again.

To mark this milestone, we commissioned a special film showcasing just some of the incredible stories from over the past 25 years. Featuring projects in Zambia, India, Bahamas, Germany and Nepal, hear directly from Award holders, participants, volunteers and staff about how Special Projects funding has impacted them.
