International Award photography competition: Winners announced!

In July 2022, The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation launched our first ever global Photography Competition. After receiving more than 700 entries from over 50 countries, our panel of judges selected the three winners.

The photography competition, which ran for six months from July to December last year on intaward.org, was open to all connected to the Award and received more than 700 entries from all around the world.

Entrants were encouraged to take a photo that captures what the Award means to them, and upload it to the Foundation’s website through a photo entry form. As well as a picture of the Award in action, the form also encouraged photographers to share their story about their connection to the Award, how they were involved and what memories they have of their experiences.

Meet the judges

A shortlist of photos was given to our esteemed judging panel. The panel was made up of three young people, including two Emerging Leader Representatives; Gold Award holders who work with the Association on behalf of their region of the world, an Award alumni who is a professional cinematographer and a Foundation Trustee.

The judges gave their opinions on which photos they thought were the best and why, taking into account composition, lighting and emotion and their scores were added up. The three photos with the highest ratings were voted the winners.

Eyes on the prize

But it wasn’t just the prestige of winning that was up for grabs. The three top images, as selected by our expert panel, would also receive a prize worth £250 each.

With the prospect of winning one of three cash prizes, budding photographers from young Award participants to staff and adult volunteers rolled up their sleeves and got to work!

We are delighted that hundreds of adults and young people got involved in the competition which led to some difficult decisions for our judging panel as they reviewed a shortlist of photos and together decided on the three winning images, as well as two special commendations.
