Alex Rodriguez
Award Level:
Bronze
Favourite memory of the Award:
The entirety of my camping trip to Strathcona Provincial Park – was so different than anything I've done before. While other parts of my award (tennis, baking and student council service) challenge me in other ways, they are all concentrated in the city where I live. I've been a concrete jungle, urban aboding, Downtown Vancouver kid my entire life. The camping trip to Baby Bedwell Lake changed my perspective of nature and motivated me to explore more of it in the future.
Age:
15
Biggest challenge from doing the Award:
Definitely, the first night of the qualifying journey. My tent was not properly set up, and the wind was extremely strong. I also heard footsteps around my tent, and there was a ravenous dog staying on the campgrounds (I have had a fear of dogs since childhood). However, my friends and I all woke up and helped each other fix out tents together.
Country:
Canada
Have you continued any of your Award activities? If so, what:
I love to play tennis, bake for festivities and attend student council meetings as an active member.
Tell us the story behind your photo:
It was especially cold and rainy on the second day of my qualifying journey. The night before had been challenging (wind, adjusting to the environment), and we hiked for four hours to reach another lake the next morning. My friend and I were especially being pushed to our limits which resulted in this hug. The hug represents compassion and empathy, even during tumultuous moments.
